No one likes a troll.

In the novel "Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone" the troll is this huge, ugly creature portrayed to be highly unintelligent. Today, a new breed of troll has come into existence: the Twitter troll.
Jimmy Kimmel, host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", does a segment called, "Mean Tweets", where he has celebrities read aloud insulting tweets sent directly to them. Here's a direct link to the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrjp6e04dZ8, and a few examples of the tweets presented by the celebrities mentioned within them...

"I just saw @jessicaalba. If this was 2007 I'd be really excited."
"@_KateMara is on the list of people who i don't understand why anyone likes."
"Dear @nodoubt, The only thing in doubt is whether ur music makes me want to puke... or kill myself & then puke. Sincerely, everyone"

Why is it that in our day and age strangers can be so cruel? My best guess? Anonymity. The ability to hide behind a computer screen provides a person with a newfound power. Even though Twitters users are not really anonymous, they reap the benefits of anonymity; because the insults they are posting are directed towards people who do not know them. Since the user has never met nor interacted with the person they are tweeting an awful message to he or she will be less inclined to feel the guilt attributed with bullying and teasing.

Sometimes Twitter users will create accounts for the sole purpose of trolling celebrities. They may pretend to be a celebrity or make an account filled with pictures of a celebrity or quotes they have twisted in order to form clever insults. For instance, there is a twitter user with the handle @CagesFace who only uses the account to post photos in which he has replaced someone's face with an embarrassing face of Nicholas Cage.

The web seems to desensitize viral bullying and create the illusion of being 'untouchable', therefore making it far simpler for millions of people around the world to participate.

The issue is that there seems to be no possible method of stopping it. There is no "Stupefy" curse to stun the trolls and halt their mischief.

There will always be trolls.
